THE THEME IS ‘FLUID GEOGRAPHIES’
Flows and filtrations occur across place, people and geographical knowledge. The conference – held in Tauranga Moana - focuses on fluid geographies from three interrelated viewpoints. First, the theme acknowledges the importance of watery Aotearoa – ocean, coastlines, rivers, lakes – as we become wetter and wilder due to climate change weather related events. Second, fluid geographies as a theme acknowledges that people and places are always in flux: socially; environmentally; politically; and, physically. Change, renewal, seeking equity and movement are part of everyday life. Third, the theme invites critical thinking about geographical knowledge as beyond fixed, bordered and linear understandings of place, location and time. We invite presentations that conceptualise geographical knowledge as ‘fluid’, that is, as voluminous, material, and in continual reformation in order to reinvigorate, redirect and reshape geographical debates.
We invite scholars, iwi, teachers, students, activists and artists to explore the generative potential of fluid geographies whether engaged as a physical phenomenon, a material metaphor, an analytical tool and / or a political strategy. We strive for a diversity of voices and perspectives from the many tributaries of geography and other spatially and environmentally allied disciplines.
While presentations and panels on any geographical subject are welcome, we especially encourage topics that resonate with the overall conference theme, for example:
We want this conference to showcase geographical research by geographers, collaborators and partners in allied disciplines. We wish to support and elevate postgraduate and early career research and research in partnership with tangata whenua and communities. Above all we want this conference to be intellectually stimulating and enjoyable for everyone.

- Geographies of future water challenges: drought, floods and storms
- ‘Three Waters’ and ‘Affordable Water’: Territorial authorities, mana whenua and co-governance
- Relational geographies of humans, water, and landscapes
- Melting places
- Gender – water relations
- Fluid subjectivities and embodied geographies: gender, sexuality, age, ethnicity, disability
- Tai timu tai pari (tidal ebb and flow)
- Liminal places and tidal communities
- Sponge cities
- Making space for water
- Shape-shifting methodologies
- Fluid ontologies
- Knowledge waves
